5 Ways To Mosquito-Proof Your Campsite

Tips to Keep Your Summer Camping Trip Bite-Free

Summer camping season is right around the corner and we're ecstatic to escape the city, put down the phone, and Enjoy Life Outdoors!  Whether it's camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains (Pisgah National Forest is our go-to), along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, or in your secret home away from home spot, getting off the grid comes with its fair share of pesky pests and mosquitoes.  Here are some tips on setting up a bite-free basecamp this summer!

1. Use Lemon Eucalyptus Spray

Never leave home without it!  Before you even leave the car to hike in, be proactive about protecting yourself along the trail--the last thing you want is to be itchy before the fun even starts.  Murphy's Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil goes on easy with a cool, refreshing scent and isn't greasy or sticky after it dries.  This highly effective and powerful stuff will help repel mosquitoes and insects for up to 6 hours.  Hopefully your hike isn't that long or you're going to need a lot s'mores at the finish line ;)

2. Wear The Right Clothing

Rumor has it mosquitoes are attracted to darker-colored clothes, so be sure to pack accordingly. Wear lightweight long-sleeved shirts and apply Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Spray directly to your clothing for an extra layer of protection.  It's DEET-free, so it won't harm or deteriorate any of your gear (clothing, tents, fishing line, etc.) like most other chemical-based repellents.  Good for the Family, Good for the Planet...Good for your Gear!

3. Use Tent Etiquette

First things first, double check your tent for rips and holes before you leave the house.  Lay down a tent footprint or ground cover to protect the floor of your tent from wear and tear.  Double walled tents offer the best protection--an inner tent layer with breathable nylon, and an outer layer or a "fly" that's wind and water resistant.  When setting up your tent at basecamp, keep the windows and doors zipped close and always zip it up quickly after you enter and leave.  If you're getting swarmed, spray Lemon Eucalyptus Oil on the outer layer for maximum protection.

4. Setup Somewhere High & Dry

Scope out a basecamp spot that is flat, dry, and offers a good breeze to keep the bugs at bay.  Also, steer clear of locations adjacent to standing bodies of water -- lakes, creeks, puddles, etc. -- because these tend to be prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  You never know when some rainy weather might roll through (we're not trying to jinx it!), so be sure to setup camp in a spot that gets plenty of sunshine to dry out over the course of the day.

5. Start a Campfire + Use Mosquito Sticks

As much as bugs love light, they aren't big fans of fire and smoke.  Build a fire a safe distance from your tent to stay warm, cook and provide smoke for the surrounding area.  Next, grab a couple Mosquito Sticks and place those closer to your surrounding area -- tents, chairs, picnic table, etc.  Each stick offers a slow burn (2+ hours) with a powerful mosquito & flying insect repellent punch.

Time for the S'mores

You've earned it.  Now that basecamp is setup, kick back, relax and Enjoy Life Outdoors!

2017 Bug Barometer

Hart Roberts

Irregular Winter Patterns Increase Spring & Summer Pest Pressure

The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recently released its annual Bug Barometer -- a guide for 2017's buggy Spring and Summer forecast, coast-to-coast. Due to an exceptionally milder winter temperatures across the county + heavy precipitation, Americans can expect those pesky pests to be out in full force this spring and summer.

“With growing concern over infectious diseases spread by pests such as West Nile virus, Zika virus, Lyme disease and more, diligent prevention and awareness is especially necessary given the high pest populations that are projected for the warmer seasons ahead," said Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., chief entomologist and vice president of technical and regulatory affairs for the NPMA.

To develop the Bug Barometer, the NPMA’s staff entomologists combine pests’ biological behaviors with careful examination of previous weather conditions and forecasted weather patterns to predict how pest pressure will be impacted across the country.

Why Murphy’s Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Repellent?

Kelsey Sanders

Adios Mosquitoes

As summertime approaches, you might be asking yourself: "which mosquito repellents really work best?" From sticks to sprays, everybody has his or her own bug repellent remedy. At Murphy's Naturals, our motto has always been centered around helping people Enjoy Life Outdoors, that's why we wanted to shed some light on the benefits of our Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Insect Repellent Spray before you head out on your next adventure.

  1. CDC Approved - This is big. All-natural oil of Lemon Eucalyptus is the only plant-based ingredient recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  2. DEET Free - For decades people used DEET until high toxicity concerns and health hazards began to surface. Sometimes you just don't need the power and toxicity of DEET -- you need something clean, powerful and refreshing. Also, ingredients in DEET can eat away at your gear...not ideal for Enjoying Life Outdoors!
  3. Refreshing Smell - How many times have you put on normal bug spray and wish you hadn't? Lemon Eucalyptus Oil has a fresh scent that goes on cool and doesn't leave you stinky in your tent for the rest of the night. We'd use it as a car air refresher if could. (Hmm, another product idea?!)
  4. Non-Greasy - This is #1 in our hearts. If you're in a tent, around a camp fire or grilling in your backyard, the last thing you want is to feel greasy when you spray on some bug repellent. Instead, you want to feel refreshed, clean and protected. Murphy's Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil sprays on dry and helps fight off those pesky pests so you can keep on enjoying life outdoors.
  5. Long-Lasting - Lemon Eucalyptus Oil sticks by your side through thick and thin. It's long-lasting with just a single application.

Keeping The Outdoors Bee Friendly

Kelsey Sanders

As a natural products brand we're all about helping people enjoy life outdoors. Intrinsic to this mission includes being good stewards of the outdoors so that we can help preserve it for others to enjoy! As an extension of this we wanted to share a few Bee facts, and spread a few tips on what can be done to help save our pollinator friends.

It's already well know that Honeybees provide us with a natural sweet treat, but did you know that their honey also offers several health benefits? Cough suppressant, digestive aid and allergy protection are all ways that a spoonful of honey can do you some good!

Additionally, the work of pollination done by bees is extremely important to both humans and animals. Without bee pollination, there would be a variety of foods that would cease to exist, as bees are responsible for almost 80% of crop pollination. Asparagus, broccoli, cucumbers, cantaloupe, pumpkin, watermelon and almonds are all foods that we'd no longer be able to enjoy without the bees.

Unfortunately, the world has seen a decline in honeybee populations in recent years. Colonies have dropped from 4 to 2.5 million since 1970.

So what can we do to protect the bees? Plant bee friendly plants, eliminate pesticides and buy local honey. We can also support companies that are actively working to help save the bees. Check out a few that we've listed below!

Folks out there working to save the bees.

The Good of the Hive

  • Hand paints honeybee murals to raise awareness about the current struggle and population decline of honeybees

Act for Bees

  • Provides education, they recently helped create a children's curriculum called 'Love Food? Love Bees!'

Bee Project Apiaries

  • Offers an Urban Pollination Project which allows opportunities to observe and learn about honeybee hives and beekeeping

Planet Bee Foundation

  • Offers a variety of programs and resources including a corporate beekeeping program that helps companies install hives on their roofs

The Xerces Society

  • Pollinators conservation organization, launched bumble bee watch to track and conserve North American Bumble Bees

Bee Downtown

  • Installs and maintains hives, and promotes honeybee awareness and education. We love that they were able to help us install hives on our roof here at Loading Dock Raleigh! Our hives were installed last April of 2016, and we're excited to watch them thrive. Check our this snapshot of the hives progress that Bee Downtown put together last Fall.

The Facts on DEET

Cam Barker

What You Need to Know About DEET

As scary as it sounds? N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, also known as DEET is a commonly recognized mosquito repellent. Have you ever wondered then, why all the fuss for DEET-Free products? If it keeps mosquitos at bay wouldn’t we want DEET in our repellent products? Eh possibly not, we’ll lay out a few basic facts to help you decide.

Derived from coal tar, DEET is a synthetic chemical and powerful solvent. If you’ve been around the outdoor hiking/hunting/fishing world you may have heard in particular to stay away from products with this ingredient. It’s ability to melt plastic and damage paint and synthetic materials doesn’t make it an ideal substance to use near outdoor gear and equipment. Understandably, this doesn't leave very many people feeling keen about applying it to their skin.

The debate is then, whether we’re worse off getting bit or using products containing DEET. Add to the equation, mosquitos that carry dangerous viruses like Zika, malaria, dengue fever, West Nile virus.

This was the dilemma Murphy’s Naturals set out to address. We wanted to offer a product folks could feel good about using. A natural product that was effective, safe, and okay to get on outdoor gear and equipment.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil, also know as Citriodiol, is the active ingredient found in our Murphy’s Naturals Insect Repellent Spray. Sourced entirely from essential oils, Lemon Eucalyptus Oil is derived from the Eucalyptus Citriodora Plant, grown on small plantations in western Australia. Recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Lemon Eucalyptus Oil repels Mosquitos for up to 6 hours. The fact that it’s biodegradable means that it’s also environmentally friendly. Sounds like a win-win for everyone. Except for mosquitos, but hey, we’re not too worried about them.

Looking for the best DEET free insect repellents? Check out our recommended products -- Good for the family, good for the planet!

Outdoor Mosquito Protection

Hart Roberts

Remember the 3 D's of Mosquito Protection

Want to help protect yourself and your guests from those pesky mosquito bites? Draining nearby mosquito habitats, dressing appropriately, applying the right insect repellent and defending your yard are all protective actions you can take to beat the bugs this upcoming summer.

1. Drain

Since mosquitoes require water to breed, removing standing water around your house is a must-do.

  • Clear roof gutters of water and debris.
  • Dispose of any tires or larger objects that might collect rain.
  • Clean pet bowls and bird baths reguarly.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of your recycling containers and trash cans to improve drying time.
  • If it can collect water, it can potentially breed hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes -- Drain or dispose bottles, overturned buckets, plant pots, trash can lids, tarps, etc.

2. Dress

If you know you're going to be outside on a buggy evening, be sure to dress appropriately. Long-sleeved, loose fitting, light colored clothing will help eliminate the potential bug biting threat. A non-greasy Lemon Eucalyptus Oil, the only plant-based ingredient recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), can be applied to clothing for extra protection without harming gear.

3. Defend

Choosing the right mosquito repellent for your body and yard is the final step in defending your family and friends from those unwanted pest guests. Start with a non-sticky insect repellent spray that has a refreshing scent -- you don't want to feel uncomfortable or smell funny. If you're having a BBQ or enjoying dinner in the backyard, use mosquito candles and mosquito sticks so you can fortify your area and get back to what really matters...enjoying life outdoors!
