Five Plants that Repel Mosquitoes

Elizabeth Gay

Mosquitoes are one of the few nuisances of summertime. This small creature can ruin a beautiful day outdoors. Not only do their bites cause irritation, but they carry diseases that can cause many issues. Mosquitoes are attracted to humans because of their ability to smell. When they smell the carbon monoxide that we produce, they bite. To prevent this from happening, grow the following plants in your garden in order to keep these pests away!

Here are our five favorite plants to grow in your garden that pair well with our all natural products:

Marigolds

This easy-to-grow flower will be a colorful addition to your garden! Their scent not only repels mosquitoes, but also rabbits (keep your garden safe). It can also be used as a border plant to help other plants grow. Make sure they get plenty of sun!

Horsemint

Horsemint, commonly known as Bee Balm, is very similar to Citronella in that its scent masks human smell. Bees and butterflies are attracted to this plant (hence the name), so your garden will always be pollinated and lively. Bonus if you live on the coast as it can grow in salty living conditions!

Rosemary

Not only will your garden look and smell amazing with this herb, but your food will taste delicious as well! Make sure to pick up Murphy’s Mosquito Repellent Balm that uses rosemary as a main ingredient to fight off mosquitoes!  Also, use it when you cook or place it in a cocktail as a garnish.

Basil

All types of basil work as a mosquito repellent. Like rosemary, it can be used in your food or drinks too. Try to grow this herb in pots, so that you can keep it in areas where you enjoy relaxing outside.

Lavender

The smell of fresh lavender will certainly keep mosquitoes away because they hate the smell. You can also use this plant to make your own lavender oil! Another added bonus: it is strong plant and can withstand droughts.

Mosquito Proof Your Memorial Day

Emily Bennett

Take the Bite out of Memorial Day

Memorial Day is coming in hot and here at Murphy's, we want to help you keep it mosquito proof! Whether you're grilling in the backyard, hanging on the patio, or adventuring in the mountains, you should be able to Enjoy Life Outdoors without those pesky 'squitoes.

Here are three ways to keep the mosquitoes from biting on your Holiday Weekend:

1. Get Rid of Standing Water

The only water you should be standing in is a lake, river, or ocean. Mosquitoes come alive in any standing water, it's literally their breeding ground. So, if you're trying to enjoy your backyard this weekend make sure to dry things up from that last thunderstorm. Overturned trashcan lids, buckets and children's toys can all collect water after a storm. Be sure to dump them before you invite your guests over.

2. Blow Them Away

You might enjoy the breeze from your porch fan, but the mosquitoes don't. They'll steer clear from any breezy areas. So keep those fans blowing on your back porch when you're hosting the family or friends for dinner.

3. Keep Murphy's by Your Side

Whether you're out on the porch with our Ceramic Candle, on the boat with our Leo Spray in hand, or Hiking the Appalachians with our balms in pocket, Murphy's has your back.

Why Murphy's Naturals? What sets us apart?

I recently discovered the Murphy’s Naturals brand of insect repellant products and had the opportunity to put them to the test in the heart of Florida’s Everglades National Park. My friends and I make an annual pilgrimage to the glades in search of Giant tarpon on the fly and the most common complaint in camp is about the intensity and ferocity of the mosquitos in the Park. I could not conceive o a better place to try out the Murphy’s Naturals line of products.

What's your favorite product?

I started with the bug balm and found it effective and refreshing on the skin. Next I applied the spray on my hat, shirt collar and pants legs and feet. On the occasion that I missed a spot on my feet or in the case of one random fire ant bite on my foot I was extremely grateful for the bite balms soothing properties.

What's your favorite way to Enjoy Life Outdoors?

In the evenings swapping stories around the campfire with a bourbon rattler, we lit the insect sticks around our perimeter. Allowing us to enjoy our brief time together in the last great American jungle.

Tick and Mosquito Infections Spreading Rapidly, says C.D.C.

Hart Roberts

Did you read The New York Times report this week? The C.D.C. finds tick and mosquitos infections are spreading rapidly in the United States.

"The number of people getting diseases transmitted by mosquito, tick and flea bites has more than tripled in the United States in recent years, federal health officials reported on Tuesday. Since 2004, at least nine such diseases have been discovered or newly introduced here."

Meet Ana-Maria

Ana-Maria is a pediatrician, wife, and mom of 3 children. She's been living in the US since 1984, when she and her parents emigrated from Romania. Her passion is providing medical advice and tips for the whole family, and educating children on living healthier lives.  Ana-Maria's love for natural products and the outdoors made her a perfect fit for Murphy's!

Why Murphy's Naturals?

I recommend Murphy's Naturals to my families because rather than using the neurotoxic compound DEET, I love that you use essential oils to repel mosquitoes. I also love that the balms use locally sourced bees wax. Murphy's got my attention because the clean ingredients allow the products to be used on all age groups, including babies. Not only do I love the story behind product development, but also the community involvement. A business geared towards clean living and advocating for humanity gets my vote.

What's Your Favorite Product?

My favorite product is The Eucalyptus Oil for quick application to skin, clothes, and outdoor gear!

What's Your Favorite Way To Enjoy Life Outdoors?

My favorite way to Enjoy Life Outdoors is with my family of six! With my husband, three teenagers, and a dog, we love hiking, outdoor fitness, yard work (ok, only 2 people like this), picnics, and nightly dinners in our outdoor living space!

Douglas+Hurdle.jpeg

Meet Douglas

Douglas fell in love with the outdoors as a kid playing in the backyard and exploring the woods behind his house in Maryland. When he moved to North Carolina, he still loved playing and exploring in the outdoors, but now his backyard has no boundaries and is only limited by how far he can travel in a day. He recently completed the Triple Crown -- thru-hiking in entirety the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail. Douglas' love for the outdoors combined with his desire to do good for planet makes him a perfect fit for Murphy's!

Why Murphy's Naturals?

I love working with Murphy's Naturals because they care about what goes into their product which gives me peace of mind when using their products. And being an avid outdoor enthusiast protecting the environment is very important to me and a lot of brands say they care but Murphy's put their money where their mouth is by giving 1% back to the planet.

What's Your Favorite Product?

The product I find myself using the most is the Mosquito Repellent Balm it is just so lightweight and compact that you can just throw it in your pack and forget about it.

What's Your Favorite Way To Enjoy Life Outdoors?

My favorite thing about outdoor activities is that there is a season for everything. So whether it is winter and I find myself ice climbing or skiing or when it is warmer I will be hiking, paddling, mountain biking, or just sitting around a fire with some good friends.

Finally, a natural mosquito repellent that hits the mark: Get it now at your local Target

Hart Roberts

One mosquito-fighting entrepreneur is about to get a major lift, and he is buzzing.

Starting a company in your garage has become a common trope; but selling your product off the shelves of Target is an entrepreneur’s dream. Raleigh-based Murphy’s Naturals is now selling their plant-based mosquito-repelling products in over 1000 select Target stores around the country.

Every summer, products line the shelves for the season’s most-notorious pest, but when you read the hundreds of 5-star reviews on Amazon, it’s no wonder that Target sought out Murphy’s Naturals. From Tennessee to the Caribbean, reviews tend to read along the lines of this one: "FABULOUS!! A MUST HAVE!" With products from spray pumps to mosquito incense sticks, Murphy’s Naturals takes a DEET-free approach to repelling the biting nuisances, and they beat out other natural competitors by using much higher percentages of the good stuff like citronella and lesser-known repellents like lemongrass, rosemary, and CDC-approved lemon eucalyptus. They also list their items at more reasonable prices—another boon for Target shoppers.

Although they have been in business for less than 5 years, founder and veteran Phillip Freeman has taken this success in stride, “We put it out there, it was an all-natural solution...and all of a sudden we started getting momentum like crazy.”

In addition to the types of plants they include, they also tap them in the pure form of real essential oils, which is also sustainably sourced. Murphy’s Naturals uses concentrations that far exceed market standards, with amounts from 10% in their incense to 30% of the lemon eucalyptus in their spray. The result? Potent repellents that neither sting, burn, nor contain toxins.

“We wanted to create a product that was all-natural and fully sustainable and free of all the toxins and chemicals and petroleums that most products have in them," Freeman explained to ABC Eyewitness News in a previous interview.

Look for Murphy’s Naturals in a select Target near you, stock up, and welcome summer with open, unbitten arms.
